Recent Arrests and Jail Bookings in Lenawee County
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office operates Lenawee County Jail as the county-wide intake and detention center. When an arrest results in jail admission, the jail creates the booking record, while the law enforcement agency that made the arrest keeps its own incident report. Public custody status can appear through Michigan’s MI-VINE/VINELink service after booking information enters the jail system, so an arrest made only a short time earlier can precede a searchable custody record. A full legal name and, when available, date of birth or booking number help distinguish people with similar names.
-
Check MI-VINE/VINELink for custody status. Michigan’s MI-VINE service includes participating county jails and is designed to show whether an inmate is in custody and to report later custody changes such as release or transfer.
-
Check the Lenawee County 2A District Court Public Case Search through MiCOURT next. Once a criminal case has been filed with the court, the court record becomes a separate source for case numbers, hearings, and other filed information.
-
Contact the jail when the arrest is very recent and neither source has a record yet. An arrest can be followed by transportation, identification, intake, and booking before the inmate’s custody information is available through a public system.
The arresting agency and the jail perform different functions during those first hours. The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office makes arrests through its own law enforcement operations, while municipal and township police departments and the Michigan State Police also make arrests within Lenawee County. A person arrested by another department can still be booked into Lenawee County Jail, but that does not make the Sheriff’s Office the custodian of the arresting agency’s investigative report.
Jail Bookings
A booking at Lenawee County Jail records the inmate’s admission into county custody. The arresting agency identifies which law enforcement office brought the case to the jail, while the booking date identifies when jail intake occurred. A booking number serves as an identifier for the jail record and can also be used in Michigan’s MI-VINE system. Charges recorded during intake describe the allegations associated with the arrest, and bond information can be added when an amount or release condition has been entered.
The arresting agency and the jail do not make the final charging decision simply by creating that entry. Law enforcement submits the case for review, the prosecutor determines which criminal charges are filed, and the court conducts the arraignment and handles the resulting case. An arrest therefore records an allegation, not proof of guilt. As the case proceeds, custody status, release information, court events, and formally filed charges can differ from the information recorded during the initial booking.
Arrest Report Requests
-
Identify the agency that made the arrest. A Sheriff’s Office arrest report is held by the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office Records Division. Reports created by Adrian Police Department, Tecumseh Police Department, another municipal or township department, or the Michigan State Police are requested from that arresting agency instead.
-
Submit a Sheriff’s Office report request through the public records process. The Sheriff’s Office accepts online requests through its records portal and also accepts requests by fax or mail. Complaint, incident, investigative, and crash reports maintained by the office are processed by the Records Division.
-
Describe the requested record clearly enough for staff to locate it. Useful identifying details include the name involved, approximate incident date, location, and a report or incident number when one is available. The county accepts its FOIA request form or another written description of the requested public record.
-
Wait for the Records Division’s response. A request can be granted, denied, granted in part, or extended for additional processing. When only part of a record can be released, the releasable portions are separated from information withheld from disclosure.

A released arrest report can contain the incident narrative, officer observations, identifying information, dates, locations, and other releasable portions of the investigation. An active law enforcement investigation can limit disclosure when releasing information would interfere with the proceeding. Personal information, confidential-source information, investigative techniques, and other protected details can also be removed before a report is released.
Public Arrest Records
Four records serve different purposes. MI-VINE/VINELink provides public custody-status information for inmates in participating county jails. A booking record is the jail’s intake record and can contain the booking identifier and custody information. The arrest report belongs to the law enforcement agency that investigated or made the arrest and is requested from that agency. Once charges reach court, the judicial case becomes a separate court record.
The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office does not display booking photos as part of a public online jail gallery. A Sheriff-held booking photo can instead be sought through the Records Division public records process. Michigan guidance treats a county sheriff’s booking photograph as a public record, subject to the normal records-review process.
